How to research an alternate aircraft part number
An alternate-part search should end with an evidence trail: the requested part, the proposed replacement, the document connecting them, and the limits of that document.
Start with the exact part and aircraft
Our research worksheet begins with the complete part number, including every dash number and suffix, the aircraft model and serial, and the identity of the installed assembly. Record where the original number came from: a parts catalog, an equipment label, or a previous purchase. Keep an uncertain transcription marked as uncertain.
Ask what “alternate” means
A supplier may be proposing a manufacturer supersession, a PMA article, an exchange unit, or a part that only looks similar. Ask which relationship is claimed and request the supporting reference. Do not turn a search-result match into an interchangeability statement.
Check a PMA claim against the FAA record
The FAA directs readers to its Dynamic Regulatory System for PMA listings. These can be searched by article number, approval basis, and eligible make and model. Use the actual listing and its applicability information when researching the proposal. FAA replacement-parts and PMA resources.
Keep applicability and availability separate
A listing can show a part for sale without answering whether it belongs on a particular aircraft. For a Caravan 208 or 208B lookup, ask the reviewer to identify the catalog revision, figure, item, serial effectivity, and configuration notes. A serial-range match alone leaves those other questions open.
A better question to send the supplier
“Please identify the exact proposed replacement for [part number], the manufacturer or FAA document supporting it, applicable aircraft and configuration restrictions, condition, traceability, and current quantity available.” Keep the response with the source reference and the date checked.
